Subway Future Is Now / New cars have better sights and sound
At first sight, it doesn't look very special. Its stainless-steel exterior and old-fashioned steel rails are commonplace in the city subway system.
But inside each car there are bright lights, generous air conditioners, computerized maps and digital time displays. And the recorded announcements are practically crystal clear.
New York City Transit officials yesterday began testing the first of two new trains that will replace most of the so-called Redbird subway cars that run on the IRT No. 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 lines. After they pass their 30-day consecutive service test, the transit agency plans to order 1,080 of the new cars, which are expected to be in service by the end of next year.
